Weekly Update 04/21/2017

From Bob Schwartz, City Manager

Honorary Councilmember of the Month – Councilmember Baker appointed John Wayne Cody of E. Soule Street as the honorary councilmember for May. We had his lunch and tour on Friday.

Street Signs – On Monday Jody and I delivered 15 “Emory” street signs to Dean Joe Moon at Oxford College. We’ve been doing this for the last four years and ever since we started, the number of street signs that are torn down as souvenirs and that we have to pay to replace has been greatly reduced. Dean Moon uses the signs as awards for the students.

Chipper and Leaf Truck Repair – The rear end on the chipper and leaf truck broke and we’ve had it repaired. It wasn’t cheap. We had a rebuilt rear drive axle assembly installed. The total cost was $3,846.

Lightning Strike – We had a lightning strike at about 4:30 PM Tuesday. It caused the lights all over the city to blink. But where it hit it took a primary switch and several customers out of service. It was just off of Collingsworth. The picture shows the broken switch after Scottie replaced it. After the lightning strike, the only evidence was the small piece of ceramic that had fallen to the ground near the pole. Scottie found it and went up with the bucket in the rain into the maze of wiring on the pole to replace the switch. PS. Ceramic is nonconductive and should be immune from lightning – but nobody told this particular lightning bolt!
