Weekly Update 05/26/2015

From Bob Schwartz, City Manager

Police Training - Chief Harvey and Lt. Pilgrim recently attended POST required training concerning child fatalities. Training which we hope they never have to use.

Oxford College Tennis - Members of the Oxford men’s tennis team punctuated the 2014-15 academic year with an exclamation point, winning the NJCAA III men’s tennis national tournament. Oxford beat out 11 other teams from across the country in the competition, which took place May 11-14 at Collin College in Plano, Texas. This is Oxford’s fifth national tennis title in the last decade. In 2011, the Oxford women’s team were NJCAA Division III national champions, and Oxford men won previously in 2006, 2007, and 2009.

Tree Campus – Oxford College is certainly a tree campus. They recently planted over 200 trees on and around the Quad.

Newton County Tomorrow – Mayor Roseberry presided as chairman of Newton County Tomorrow at its meeting on Friday. We had over 30 people attend. If you look closely you can see Councilmembers Davis, Windham, and Holt along with Hoyt Oliver and Norbert Thompson. Vivian Harris was there, but behind the column in the picture

Solar Cells – Georgia Power has invested in a solar cell installation north of Social Circle. It’s about 180 acres of solar cells with a power substation across the road that feeds the electricity generated into the state power grid. Paul Warfel, MEAG, and I drove over just to see it Tuesday. Really, it’s solar cells as far as you can see.
